Future Tech:

5 mind-blowing tech documentaries on Netflix

Stuck for something to watch? Having spent what feels like weeks scrolling through the Netflix title menu; we feel your pain. The problem isn’t so much a shortage of things to watch, but an abundance, and the basic 5-star rating just doesn’t cut it when it comes to crunch time.

If you’re reading this, then either you’re just as neurotic as us, or you’re looking to save yourself some time in finding the best tech documentaries on Netflix. In which case, let’s not waste any more time here and get straight to it.

5 mind-blowing tech documentaries on Netflix

1. When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions

When it comes to space documentaries on Netflix, look no further than this miniseries from the Discovery Channel. Made in conjunction with NASA, the 6-part series covers everything from the Apollo moon landings to the construction of the International Space Station – all, we should add, in glorious HD. Get stuck in.

2. Terms and Conditions May Apply

If you’ve ever listened to somebody jabbering away about data capture and wondered what all the fuss is about – then this is really a must-watch. Documentary-maker Cullen Hoback takes a look at exactly what happens with the information you provide online, criticizing major companies and governments for hiding their actions behind pages of intimidating text. So, next time you mindlessly click “I agree” at the bottom of a privacy agreement, you’ll at least have a better idea of the possible consequences.

3. Indie Game: The Movie

It’s tempting to see game developers as giant faceless corporations pumping out sequels for an easy profit. That’s probably unfair – even if partly true – but the other side of the coin is explored in Indie Game: The Movie, examining the passion and creativity behind three popular indie titles; Braid, Super Meat Boy and Fez. Whether you’re still an active gamer or you’re looking for a shot of nostalgia, this is a movie that will appeal to your inner child and – if you’d lost interest –perhaps even make you fall in love with gaming all over again.

4. Codebreaker

Based on real events, this 2012 movie tells the story of Alan Turing, whose code-breaking during World War II helped turn the tide of the conflict. Sadly, the movie takes a tragic turn, as Turing faced terrible persecution as a homosexual – eventually committing suicide in 1954. Turing is also the subject of last year’s Benedict Cumberbatch Oscar vehicle, The Imitation Game.

5. Bloomberg Risk Takers: Elon Musk

In an hour-long documentary, Bloomberg meets Elon Musk, the eccentric entrepreneur behind Tesla Motors, Solar Cities and Hyperloop. The movie chronicles his achievements, finds out what makes him tick and looks into the future. A true one-of-a-kind.
