Future Tech:

The floating speaker that looks like a Death Star

Speak... up!

Speak… up!

There’s no trick of the light here, that really is a floating speaker, levitating in space like a couple of Death Stars.

The OM/ONE is a little piece of magic from the wizards at Om Audio, who are currently running a crowdfunding campaign to put the levitating sound system into production.

Suspended above its magnetic base, the orb can be connected to any Bluetooth device from up to 33 feet to play music from services like Pandora and Spotify, while a mic turns it into a floating speakerphone. It can be used without its base if you want, and will play for up to 15 hours on one charge.

According to the manufacturers, the levitating effect isn’t just for aesthetics, but produces better audio as nearby objects won’t mess with the sound.

As for that crowdfunding drive, we forgot to mention the target has already been smashed to smithereens. With a goal of $100,000 and with 48 days still to go, the guys at Om have secured $153,000 at time of writing.

You can order the OM/ONE now for delivery at the end of the year for $179, which also bags you a free T-shirt, or you can pay $299 for the ‘Disco Edition’, pictured above. It’s then $529 for the two-ball stereo edition, and $3,000 will get you a signed prototype and dinner with the founding team.
