Tom Hanks designs genius typewriter app
Typewriter fan and Hollywood legend Tom Hanks has designed an app which we’re sure will be a Big hit, whether you live in the city or are Cast Away in the ‘Burbs.
Published by Hitcents, the Hanx Writer recreates the look of typewriter keys and the loud clacking sounds that are so enjoyable. Being an app there’s of course a few modern twists, such as a delete key and auto correct, as well as the ability to forward your letters, so if your friend has the app, the next time You’ve Got Mail it might feature the font of a Hanx 707.
But this ain’t no Toy Story, Hanks is a serious fan of typewriters – he owns around 200 – which is reflected in the quality and detail of the app. In fact, Hanks is such a fan that he was even tempted onto a fan’s podcast in 2012 after being sent a 1934 Smith Corona. Hanks replied to the request, on the Corona:
“You are out of your minds if you think… that I… wow, this thing has great action… and this deep crimson colour… Wait! I’m not so shallow as to… and it types nearly silently… Oh, OKAY!”
This week he told USA Today, “Hanx Writer is just my little gift to the future Luddite hipsters of the world”, adding, “There’s also the opportunity here to take your iPad to a coffee house and be really obnoxious with all the clickety-clacking”. That’s us sold.
It’s available for free on the iTunes store now, so Catch It If You Can.
Ps. Films on our list that we didn’t manage to shoehorn in to this story: Sleepless in Seattle, Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan.
