Fly like a giant bird with Oculus Rift
If you could have any two superpowers, they’d be flying and invisibility, right? Well now a team of design students at Zurich University of the Arts has cracked the first one using Oculus Rift. Unfortunately you’ll only be invisible to yourself.
The Birdly, Gizmodo UK reports, is a piece of apparatus, reminding us of old-school gym equipment that has become possessed, which blasts sensory stimuli towards you. This, when mixed with visuals courtesy of the VR Oculus Rift headset, makes you feel like a bird, or specifically a Red Kite, according to the Birdly crew.
You control the simulator with your hands and arms, which directly correlates to the wings and the primary feathers of the bird. The machine will react physically by creating “nick, roll and heave” movements.
For sound you only get the roaring of the wind and the flaps of the wings, and you’re exposed to different smells as the scenery changes. All the while, a fan blows wind into your beak. As Gizmodo points out, it doesn’t look very comfortable, and is probably not for the queasy, but it takes us one step closer to being Superman.
If you get to give this a try, please don’t get too absorbed in the bird of prey fantasy, we don’t want you removing the Oculus Rift headset to discover you’ve half-eaten the cat…
