How to make your own Facebook profile video
Facebook recently added the ability to add a video to your profile. So now, instead of people seeing just a static image of you, they can watch a short looping video.
You can upload pretty much anything you want, as long as it’s no longer than seven seconds. It’s a great way to express your personality and make your profile a bit more interesting. Here’s how to do it.
How to make a Facebook profile video:
1. Download the Facebook app
We’re sure most of you have it already, but if not, head to the App Store and grab it.
2. Head to your profile
Tap the More button in the bottom-right corner, than select your name to open your profile page. Tap your profile picture, and you’ll be given two options: Take a New Profile Video or Upload Video or Photo.
3. Lights, camera, action!
Select Take a New Profile Video and you can record your own using your phone. This includes audio, so think carefully about what to say if you’re going to include speech. Your video has to be no longer than seven seconds. If you choose Upload Video or Photo, you can pick a pre-recorded video, but again, it’ll have to be shorter than seven seconds, as you can’t trim a longer video. If you want to use a section of a longer video, edit it down using another program first, like iMovie.
4. Choose wisely
Don’t be afraid to do a few takes, as it’s unlikely you’ll get it right first time. Pick something simple – seven seconds isn’t long enough to convey everything about yourself, so choose one simple effect or trick instead. And remember that this will loop over and over on your profile page, so what seems hilarious first time round might get a little tired by the sixth. Pick something interesting or whimsical rather than trying too hard.
5. Pick a thumbnail
Now, it’s time to choose a thumbnail. This is a still image from the video that will serve as your profile picture in Facebook’s News Feed. Picking something eye-catching – a moment of action perhaps – will help your profile picture stand out in the sea of updates that is the News Feed.
6. Write about yourself
The update also lets you add a short, 101-character blurb about yourself. You can give a brief overview of your hobbies and interests, what you do for a living, or maybe write something witty related to your profile video.
7. Play with the other features
There are some other changes too. You can now set a temporary profile picture that only stays live for a certain amount of time. Maybe you want to show off where you are on vacation, or want to show your support for a cause like Pride.
Profile pictures and videos now appear in the centre of your profile instead of to the left too, and are slightly bigger than before, giving you more space to show off. And you can choose the five photos that appear on the mobile version of your profile page, so you can show yourself in your best light. All of these features are rolling out now, so if you haven’t seen them yet, you should do soon. Happy Facebooking!
